I waited until I was alone, before pulling it from under the bed; I ran my fingers along the old ridges in the old leather, at some time the case had been painted black for some reason. I always seemed to have had it; the lady I had been boarded with Mrs Griffiths, said it was hers and she had given it to me; why would she do that? She never gave me anything else. Not that I had much to put in it then anyway. I slipped the brass lock and raised the lid, the beautiful red satin lining, never ceased to set my heart racing; why would there be a beautiful lining in an old painted leather case? The smell of Camphor hit my nose, so strong; so pungent, it took me back to being a little boy. The case was so familiar; part of me, but all I could remember was having it while I was living with Mrs Griffiths, why couldn’t I remember further back. I removed a blue satin bag and opened it, carefully removing the gilt jewel encrusted wooden frame it contained. I carefully opened its double doors; our lady of Kazan stared out of the icon at me; a face of serene countenance. Only now did I realise what an important gift this had been, I touched the icon to my forehead, holding it there for a few seconds, silently mouthing “thank you”, I closed the gilt doors and placed it onto the bed. Next I picked up two painted miniatures the Grand Duke had given me of my parents, they were copies of the large paintings he kept in his countryside home. I stared at the picture of my father; they had been right; it could have been me looking back out of the frame. I held up my mother’s picture; her face was like a shadow in my mind, familiar, yet a stranger. I stroked the silver frame; suddenly aware a tear had fallen on the glass; I gave it a kiss and put it to the side alongside my fathers. The next picture frame, thankfully had me smiling, and gave me a warm feeling, it was a trio of photographs, Athol and Archie, Athol and me and Davy and me, I dusted it and placed it back on the window ledge, next, a larger laughing picture of Davy and me at the Grand Dukes Ball; me in full Military Uniform, it joined the other on the window ledge. Next was a small white envelope, I knew what this was, I had only made it up three nights ago; while he slept. I opened it and looked at the golden snippet of hair it contained, I brought it to my nose; sure I could smell Davy. `There you are, what are you up too? `Hi Davy, just sorting out this case’ `Can I help? Davy came over to me, he picked up the miniature paintings of my mother and father from the bed. `Your Mum was very beautiful Forts and you look just like your real dad’ I nodded `I wish I had some photographs too, there must have been some taken’ Davy nodded, then his face lit up and he reached into the case. `Hey are these mine? He held up a pair of white Y fronts, I grabbed them off him and stuffed them back into the case. `Hey, I wondered where they had gone, at least let me wash them? I am sure I blushed `No, I like them as they are’ We sat together as I took out all the papers of my adoption by Athol and then all the papers recognising me as a Prince of the Blood Imperial. Finally at the bottom of the case were a number of leather boxes containing the various be jewelled honours I had been given. `Fort’s, you should really put all these back into Athol’s safe’ I nodded, stacking them on the side to take back downstairs. `Davy, do you think Athol would be upset if I put up the miniatures of Mum and Dad? I picked them up again and stared at them, I felt my shoulders give a little istanbul escort shudder; another tear landed on the glass. Davy grabbed me from behind, his arms wrapped round me. `Oh Fort’s of course he won’t, they are your parents, he knows that’ He squeezed me tight and whispered in my ear `They would have been very proud of you’ Marcus’s door opened behind us `Oh sorry, I didn’t hear you’ I gave a cough to clear my throat and steady my emotions. `No problem come in’ Marcus came over `Would you like me to put the case into storage? `Yes that would be great’ I picked up the few bits to remain in it and closed the lid’ Marcus picked up the case `Wow, its crocodile, why did you paint it? Davy and I both looked at him `Sorry, I have seen cases just like it; well not painted, at the Grand Dukes, they were made of crocodile leather and had an embossed monogram in the centre of the lid’ He ran his fingers over the lid of the case `Yes here it is, feel it’ Davy and I felt the lid where he pointed. `So there is’ `Someone has painted over it’ Davy and I looked at each other, Marcus picked up the case `Shall I see if I can get the paint off? I was a bit torn; I didn’t remember the case any other way. `What do you think Davy? `Well, it would be nice to see if it did belong to your parents? `Your right, Marcus can you give it a try, thank you’ ** Davy continues the story I had managed to complete my letter to Prince Dima; without Fort’s seeing me, I handed it to Marcus for posting and then ran down to the Great Hall, I was just in time. * With the closing notes and rousing strains of `God Save the King’ followed by a great cheer, a blizzard of Glengarry caps launched skywards; it was time for the summer holidays. I stood watching the first, second and third years as they all hugged and slapped each other on their backs; many of the Prefects were less excited. Athol had done as much as he could to get them all into university, saving them from National Service, but there was a limit to what even he could do and a few would be joining up, the following year. One of them, Poulson, I suddenly realised I barely knew, he practically blended into the surroundings; never making a noise; never drawing attention to himself: a steady student, but never going to set the world on fire, and now, he was the first of our class of 1941 to get his call up letter. He came up and hugged me and wished me all the best in my new role as a teacher at the school; as he walked away, he stopped and looked back at me. `Davy, pray Gerry is a bad shot for me’ And he walked away; I think I was close to hyperventilating when Forts bounced over, he swept me up off the ground `Davy, it’s the summer holidays, YES’ He spun me round, and then put me back down `What’s up? You don’t look very pleased or excited about it? I took a deep breath and bit my lip. Fort’s moved closer `What is it? `Poulson, just asked me to pray for him that the Germans are bad shots; he might as well of handed me a white feather’ `Where is he? He can try giving me one too then’ Fort’s scanned the room; he began walking for the door `Fort’s no, what’s the point, come back’ He came back and gave me a playful punch on the arm. `Ignore him, come on, Athol and Archie are doing drinks in the staffroom’ Forts began to walk for the door again. `Oh, hang on’ He stopped again, here give me those, he unpinned my “Head Prefect and Head Boy” badges. `You’re a Master now, well trainee Master’ He flashed one of his smiles again; could I love this guy any more than I do already?. We joined Athol, Archie and all the staff; once more Gregor had magicked up all sorts of goodies for a buffet. Percy and Nathan had arrived too, Nathan came up behind me and put his arm round me. `Hello sexy, I hope your prepared for a lot of work, I won’t just be giving you this teaching qualification you know’ He gave me a kiss on the cheek. `Nathan, of course I will work hard, where’s Percy? I haven’t had the chance to say hello yet’ `Did I hear my name mentioned? give your uncle a big hug’ We grabbed each other; both grinning, Percy turned to Forts. `Hello handsome, or do I still have to call you your highness? Fort’s smile vanished; I glanced at him, mouthing “he is joking”. Fort’s winked back `I know, but you should have seen your face’ He Grabbed Percy `You can call me your highness if I can call you uncle P’ `Oh, I don’t know, uncle p sounds so old, how about Perc? `Well in that case you can only call me Fort’s’ They both burst out laughing `Fort’s it is then’ `Davy, I have a letter from your Mum’ Percy reached into his pocket and took out a white envelope. `From Mum, have you seen her? `Better than that, Nathan and I were invited to dinner by your dad, this big hunks party at the Savoy, paid ataköy escort off, we are no longer persona non grata’ Percy winked at Forts `Wow’ Fort’s put his arm round me and said `See, your dads not all bad’ * Athol appeared and gripped Fort’s waist from behind `Drageon, Davy, can I have a very quick word’ He turned to Percy and Nathan `Sorry, I must speak to them both and then you can have them back’ Athol took us over to his desk, he picked up a buff folder, I glanced at the title “The Drageonivanov Scholarship’ `Drageon, you have seen this already, Davy have a quick look at the boys who have been selected. Drageon, I mentioned getting them up before school started proper after the summer holidays, well I have just heard they are all arriving the day after tomorrow: I want you to look after them’ `But dad, I was hoping to take Davy camping’ Athol glanced up `I am sure they would love that; I doubt they have ever been camping before’ `But dad’ `Drageon, this was your idea; these are all kids from deprived back grounds, you don’t mind do you Davy, taking them with you? I glanced at Fort’s and then Athol `I didn’t even know I was going myself’ Forts mumbled something like `That’s because it was supposed to be a surprise’ But Athol wasn’t going to be put off `Excellent, well take Niki and McPhee too, you will all have great fun, why not make it a pony trekking camping break?’ I turned to Fort’s `Now that sounds like fun, you can spend a week teaching them all how to ride well enough and then we can head out into the wilds for a week’ Fort’s glanced skywards, I took his hand and squeezed it. `Hey, it will still be fun’ I leant in to his ear `If we make a good job of it, maybe we can have a few days alone later’ Archie appeared next to Forts ear. `I imagine that’s right, as long as you teach them to muck out the horses too’ He grinned at us both. I handed back the folder to Athol, Fort’s reached for it again `Dad, can I change one thing? `That depends what it is? `Well can we just call it the “The Clan MacDonald, Castle Fraser Scholarship”? `Are you sure? `Please Dad’ `Okay as you wish’ Archie, tilted his head sideways at us; his eyes locked on Athol’s; Athol looked confused… “You know”, Archie mouthed, still trying to smile. Athol looked blank `The meal tonight, have you told them? `Oh, no of course; I knew I had forgotten something, boys there is a meal tonight, Malcolm’s coming, you two, Gary, Archie and me’ Forts glanced at me `Well, we will have to check our social diary’ ** Archie takes up the story Athol was really looking forward to the meal, we all gathered in the main staffroom, Gregor and Lander’s had the table all set up and everything looked amazing. I think everyone got a bit of a shock as Gary came into the room wearing the same tartan as Athol and Forts. Athol had embraced him and welcomed him as “Brother”; Malcolm, I am sure had a tear in his eye, he proposed a toast. `To all the descendants and heirs to the Clan MacDonald’ The meal was amazing and special. Athol, Fort’s and Gary sat on one long side of the table facing us, Malcolm directly opposite him, me to his left facing Forts and Davy opposite Gary. As the meal moved to the Port and cigars; for those who partook, the rest of us settled for a large Whisky. I sat listening and watching Athol, he had certainly surprised me over when he went to Malcolm’s; I wasn’t even aware that they still spoke that often. You will all remember after the death of the last Laird, Athol’s father, he had been called back to the Castle, there he had met Malcolm again. Malcolm and the old Laird had been close friends, with Malcolm’s help Athol had assumed the mantel of Chief of the Clan MacDonald, something he neither sought or desired. It had been Malcolm, who had convinced him, he didn’t actually have a choice; this decision was not one for him to make; He had a duty and by God, he should do it. However, over those initial meetings, Malcolm had not told Athol everything he knew; the old laird having sworn him to secrecy about his half-brother, Gary. After Athol’s mothers death, Athol had never come back to the Castle, instead communicating with his father via solicitors; Athol had blamed his father for his mother’s untimely death. As we sat and listened after the meal in “open mouthed” silence, each of us clasping our Whisky. Malcolm explained it nearly broke the old Lairds spirit. Losing the love of his son, but not knowing how to bridge the chasm that had opened up between them. Lacking company, the old Laird had picked up with a local girl who was working in the Castle kitchen, they had a brief passionate affair, something Athol was never made aware of; alas she died in childbirth; the child was Gary. The Laird had made sure he was well provided aksaray escort for and raised by a local family, then as soon as he was old enough he was taken on as Castle staff; Gary was never told, who his father or half-brother were either. Under Scottish law at the time, no illegitimate son could inherit their fathers titles or lands, so Gary was raised as just “Mr”. Gary asked if he could speak; Athol nodded; Gary stood and took a deep breath. `Brother, Malcolm, family’ He raised his glass first to Athol, then Malcolm and then me, Forts and Davy. `Firstly, I hope this doesn’t change anything between us all, I have kind of enjoyed my life in the shadows, but with all of the perks. Ever since Malcolm spoke to me and told me I was the next guardian of the Lairds of the Clan MacDonald and explained everything to me’ Gary stopped; raised his glass to Malcolm and asked `May I? Malcolm nodded; Gary turned to Athol `Your Lordship, let me introduce our grandfathers, illegitimate son…and the previous guardian of the Lairds of the Clan MacDonald, Malcolm Buchanan Jardine Paterson’ Another gasp round the table `Malcolm, has handed to me the mantel of guardian of the Lairds of Clan MacDonald and their heirs’ I had to ask `But what does that mean? Gary gave a little wry smile `Oh, ensuring no harm comes to his Lairdship or his family’ He smiled and winked at me `It’s a pretty broad remit really’ He tapped his nose with his finger and chuckled letting out a little `Woo, woo, woo’ Noise, surely not, I thought. `Hang on Gary, and what about that bloody horse Pegasus? Forts smiled at me and shuffled in his chair, as Gary continued. `Now, now Archie, you will hurt his feelings. Pegasus is a very special horse. He is a direct descendant of the horse which collapsed and died getting the laird back to the castle all those centuries ago; strange but true’ `But what about the red eyes’ Gary winked at Malcolm `Oh, I know nothing about those; I just know he gets very excited, at the mention of his Lordship’ Gary turned to Athol again and raised his glass. Forts was shaking his head `I knew there was something special about him’ He leaned over to Davy `When I am riding him, it feels like we are one; it’s really strange’ Malcolm nodded `It will be you and Gary, who must ensure that Pegasus’s blood line continues’ Gary sat down; Athol took this as his signal to stand. `Well family, you will believe me when I say I only found out all this the other night at Malcolm’s; he felt it was the right time to tell me. Forts son; Gary and I have spoken, this changes nothing, you are and always will be my heir and the next Laird of the Clan MacDonald’. Gary nodded and got out of his seat and hugged Fort’s, Athol waited until he had sat down again. `Gary, is as you see wearing the same Tartan as Fort’s and I at my request, I have one more little announcement; Gary will be stepping up and assisting Archie as well as running the farming side of the estate from now on’ I started the table banging adding in a `Here, here’ For good measure. Gary looked embarrassed and nodded his head. Athol raised his glass. `The Clan MacDonald’ `The Clan MacDonald’ We echoed, as Athol sat down. Gary leaned into him and whispered something in his ear, Athol nodded. Gary stood again, he left the table, he stopped by the book case to the right of the fire, he turned to address us. `Gentlemen, there are a few more things I wish to show you’ Gary removed a book from the bookcase by the fire place, he slipped his hand into the empty space and there was an audible click; a section of the book case dropped backward; Gary turned to us, all of us with now stupefied looks on our faces; as he pushed open a hidden door. `Gentlemen follow me’ Athol leapt out of his chair `Wow, I never knew about this’ ******************** Friends, thank you for your many emails asking for the story to continue, I will get round to emailing you all back, but wanted to thank you all with another chapter, part b will follow soon.
