*Hi everyone, this is something new I’ve been working on for a little while, hope you enjoy! -Jasmine*
10 Years Before
“Don’t forget your inhaler,” Savannah’s mother said as she stood in the doorway of her childhood bedroom.
Savannah walked over to her old dresser and tossed her inhaler in her duffle bag. “Trust me, I won’t forget.”
Savannah Williams struggled to pack her luggage with her mother’s watchful eyes examining her every move. She suddenly remembered why she wanted to leave in the first place.
Most of her friends had moved west for new beginnings, chasing a dream or a career, and Savannah somehow found herself in a town where she knew no one. But this summer was a fresh start, she needed to step out of her comfort zone away from the confines of school. College was her first time getting into the “real world,” she wanted more things to do in her free time to focus on herself.
Only a few months had passed since Savannah’s mother called her in a panic. Her parents’ seemingly sudden divorce blindsided her, she never imagined it would happen to their marriage. She was suddenly forced to stay with her distraught mother during her summer break in her mother’s hometown near Grand Rapids called Everling, but the first few weeks proved hard enough. She needed to get out of the house and Camp Champanog seemed like the best option.
Savannah’s mother, Eugenia crossed her arms. “I’m not sure I even want you going to this camp, how much are they paying you again? It’s not too late to go back to campus and get an internship.”
“Mom, it’s too late for that, I already had orientation.” Savannah sighed as she carefully placed her camera bag beside her suitcase. “Internship applications closed months ago and I want to do this. Besides, this job will pay more than an internship with a magazine company.”
Eugenia crossed her legs on her daughter’s bed and watched as Savannah walked around the room, organizing her luggage. “It’s worth a shot.”
“I don’t know Mom, maybe this summer you should go out more, there’s a few clubs in the city.” Savannah murmered. “It’s too late for me to go back to New York.”
“Savannah, you know I don’t like clubs, they’re all sleazy and grown adults are there to have sex in those disgusting bathrooms with the cocaine on the sinks.” Eugenia replied. “N-no, you’re not wearing those shorts.”
“Why?” Savannah turned around in the mirror to look at her backside.
“They’re way too short, I can almost see your behind,” Eugenia said as she pointed to Savannah’s shorts. “Maybe you need to stop eating so many carbs.”
Eugenia was older than most of Savannah’s friends’ moms, she was more traditional than anything. She thought Savannah’s fascination with photography and art was not practical for a woman but she knew it was her headstrong daughter’s true passion.
“It’s going to be super hot today, it’s going up to ninety,” Savannah sighed as she looked down at her shorts that reached the tops of her thighs. “I don’t wanna overheat, ya know that’s a formula for a bad asthma attack.”
She removed her shirt and changed into a sky blue tank top that complemented her deep mahogany skin tone. She stood in her vanity mirror as she tossed her long braid extensions into a high ponytail and applied a quick swipe of lip balm before tossing it into her purse.
“I think I’m ready now.” she said confidently.
Eugenia looked at her daughter with tears in her eyes. She carried her luggage into Savannah’s Toyota Corolla, a gift from her father for her 16th birthday.
“I’ll miss you, baby.” her mother said as she closed the trunk. “Promise to visit me on weekends?”
Savannah smiled. “I’ll miss you too, but I don’t think I’ll have weekends off.”
Eugenia covered her daughter’s cheek in kisses. “I guess you’re right.”
“I love you mom,” Savannah smiled. “I’ll call you when I get there.”

Camp Champanog is about an hour outside of Everling, with the nearest sign of life being in the city of Fordsdale.
It was a quick drive from her mother’s house and felt just far away enough that her mother couldn’t spy on her. Savannah saw the large, wooden welcoming sign of Champanog surrounded by trees. The camp was huge, it held about two hundred campers with roughly three hundred acres, a hiking trail, the lake, and rock climbing, and much more. As she drove under the sign and into the campgrounds, she saw other camp counselors preparing for the day and unloading their cars.
She found a free spot underneath a tree next to the health center. She nearly slammed her brakes when a neon green sports car pulled in front of her and took the parking spot.
“Shit,” Savannah muttered under her breath as she backed away.
Savannah sucked her teeth and circled around the lot again before finding a free spot on the other side. She jumped out of the car and unlocked her truck as she surveyed her luggage, it seemed as though she packed too much. She lifted the lighter Escort bayan suitcase and set on the ground as she reached for the second one, she felt someone’s eyes on her.
“Do you need some help with your bags?” a voice said.
Savannah knew she’d throw her back out if she lifted the heavy bag. When she turned around, her eyes met a pair of gray eyes and a tall man with long, dark hair approached her.
“No, I’m fine.”
The guy furrowed his brows at her before looking at the overstuffed duffle bags in the trunk of her car. “You sure about that?”
Savannah looked down at her heavy bags for a moment and regretted packing so much. “If you don’t mind…”
“I don’t,” he replied. With one swift movement, he threw her heavy duffle bag over his strong shoulder.
Savannah slammed the trunk shut and locked her car as the man stood there watching her.
“Thank you, so much,” she said with a small smile.
The man nodded and reached for the second bag. Savannah quickly locked the car as he turned around and walked towards the other side of the parking lot.
“What’s your name?” she asked as she tried to keep up with him on the gravel parking lot.
“Emilio Blackbird,” he said. “And you?”
“I’m Savannah,” she said. “Savannah Williams. It’s nice to meet you.”
Emilio flashed her a smile. “It’s nice to meet you as well, Savannah.”
“Are you a counselor here?”
“Yeah, I’ve been here for the past three summers, you’re new, huh?”
“Yeah, first time,”
“Well, in that case, I’ll let you speak with Mrs. Bruckheimer over here to get your cabin situation figured out.”
He smiled again, giving her one last look before continuing his walk throughout camp. Savannah stared at him for a little while longer before she picked up her bags tightened the strap and threw it over her shoulder.
Mrs. Bruckheimer, an older red-haired woman with a clipboard standing in the middle near the entrance at the flagpole.
“Hi, I’m Savannah Williams,” she greeted the woman. “I’m here for the camp counselor position..”
The woman looked up from her clipboard. “I remember you from orientation last week. Welcome aboard. You’ll be in cabin three with Molly.”
When Savannah looked over to where Mrs. Bruckheimer was pointing, she saw a small cabin nestled under a large overhanging tree. Inside, a thin blonde girl with pink highlights was blasting loud pop music and hanging up posters of Maroon 5 above the bed.
“Oh you must be my new roommate!” the girl said as she jumped off the bed, feet landing on the hardwood floor. “I’m Molly.”
Savannah smiled as they shook hands. “I’m Savannah.”
“So where are you from?” Molly asked. “Last week’s orientation was so busy I almost lost my head.”
“I’m from New York state.” Savannah rested her duffle bag on the free bed. “You?”
“Nevada,” Molly replied. “I hope you don’t mind, I took the bed by the window.”
Savannah looked around the cabin. There were five bunk beds for the campers and two single beds for counselors. The bed by the door was against the wall, no doubt providing less draft than the one by the window.
“It’s fine,” Savannah said, setting her heavy duffle bag on the bed. “I don’t mind.”
Savannah unpacked her clothes and folded them inside the dresser drawer by the bed. She meticulously arranged her face and body lotions on top of the dresser, along with bug spray and her inhaler.
Molly was already unpacked and danced around the room to the pop song. Instead of the standard light blue bedding, Molly changed her sheets into a hot pink color she brought from home.
“That’s a cute bedspread,” Savannah said, observing the pink fabric.
Molly turned around and smiled. “Thank you, I love pink if you can’t tell already. I don’t live too far from here, we can pick up an extra set for your bed if you want?”
“You don’t have to,” Savannah replied kindly. “Thank you though.”
Suddenly, Savannah felt a strong vibration in the back of her short’s pocket. When she retrieved her phone, she saw her mother’s number.
“Hi mom,” Savannah said as she sat back down on her bed.
“Savannah! Why didn’t you call me? You had me scared half to death,” her mother said in a panicked tone.
Savannah stared up at the ceiling. “I’m sorry, the drive was long and everything was happening fast.”
“Do you like it so far? Are they being nice to you?”
Molly ripped off a strip of tape and hang another poster near the door. “Bruckheimer wants us outside for the afternoon huddle.”
Savannah nodded at Molly and stood up. “Mom, I have to go but I’ll call you later this week. Please don’t worry, I’m safe here, okay?”
Her mother exhaled. “You’re right, I know, baby. I’m just not used to being here alone. Have a good day. I love you.”
“I love you too, mom.”
Outside, a group of counselors gathered next to the mess hall. Savannah was surprised to see the many races in such a small area. She never thought of Everling as being Bayan escort diverse, but the camp proved otherwise.
“As staff, we wake up every day at six o’clock to get ready, shower, and get dressed. By seven, we wake up the campers.” She explained as she held her clipboard close to her chest. “For every cabin, there are twenty campers and you’ll be responsible for them. All campers must be in their bunks no later than 9 PM unless of course there’s a group activity.”
Some of the counselors whispered amongst themselves before returning their attention to Bruckheimer.
“In this camp, the buddy system will be your best friend. You have a roommate, but you also have a counselor buddy,” she explained. “Your counselor buddy and you will work as a team with the campers you’re assigned with, it’s up to you to watch other them and keep them safe. So let’s get started, everyone!”
“Let’s see here, Damien is paired with Amanda, Samantha H, you’re paired with Patricia,” Ms. Bruckheimer said as she read off the list. “Savannah, you’re paired with Emilio and Jessica G, you’re with Jim.”
Savannah’s eyes suddenly met the tall, handsome dark-haired guy she saw when she arrived at camp.
“So we meet again,” he said casually as he walked towards her.
She smiled. “And so we do.”
Bruckheimer allowed the counselors to talk amongst themselves for a little while before dinner. Seeing him up close, Savannah could see the appeal of him. His beautiful gray eyes complimented his tanned skin. He had a few tattoos that she could see, some type of pattern that looped around his forearm and the other was of mountains.
“So is this your first year too?” she asked as she tried not to stare for too long. “I used to be a camper here, but that was like ten years ago, a lot’s changed since then.”
Emilio chuckled. “No, no. I’ve been working here every summer for the past three years. But I work in the city at the college, I do tech work there.”
“That sounds interesting.” Savannah smiled. “I’m here on break from school.”
“Oh? From where?”
“I’m from a town in New York state originally. I’m studying photography and film,” she explained. “I thought a summer doing something other than a boring campus job would be fun.”
Emilio smiled as he looked out at the water. “Well, you came to the right place. I love this place, great kids, always something to do.”
“Nice,”
As they walked, the sun was high above them, beaming down casting shadows against the trees.
“And don’t worry about Bruckheimer, she’s a big softie, she’s just tough on us as counselors at first.”
Savannah chuckled. “Good to know.”
“Yeah she’s really understanding,” he said. “She’s not as much of a hardass as she makes herself out to be.”
“Dinner is being served in five minutes!” Bruckheimer called from where she was standing near the flagpole.
Emilio got up as the two walked to the mess hall that was located on the east side of the campgrounds. They were near the entrance when she was flagged down by Molly waving from the other side of the cafeteria.
“Over here! I found a good spot for dinner.” Molly called from her seat.
“I’ll catch you later,” Savannah called over her shoulder at Emilio.
The cafeteria was a log cabin style with tall, wooden beams reaching the ceiling. Long tables sat in the middle and there were already people lined up for the cafeteria-style stand. Savannah stood with Molly as they pushed their trays and the cafeteria lady piled food on their plates. It felt like high school all over again but as adults. The food consisted of beef chili with a side of vegetables.
Savannah took a bite of her chili as she glanced at the table adjacent to her and saw Emilio talking with some of the male counselors. The other male counselors seemed a bit older than him, presumably having been there much longer. He’d occasionally look her way and she would focus back on Molly’s conversation.
“I’m so excited for this summer,” one of the girls at the table said. “Savannah, you’re so lucky, you get Emilio! He’s so hot.”
Savannah tried to hide her smile. “Yeah, I guess so.”
“What classes are you teaching this summer?” Molly asked as she took a bite of cornbread.
Savannah broke her focus. “Oh, um, photography on Fridays. You?”
Erin sighed. “I got stuck with painting. I don’t have an artistic bone in my body.”
“It’s all interpretive,” Molly said. “If you wanna paint a bowl of fruit and it looks like a bowl of dog food, that’s fine too.”
“Nothing can be worse than last summer.”
“What happened last summer?” Savannah asked curiously.
Erin nearly choked on her drink. “You didn’t hear? A camper went missing last summer for three days. They found her body in the lake.”
Savannah’s eyes grew wide with horror. “What?”
“Yeah, it looked like an accident,” Erin replied. “But no one really knows.”
“Wow,” Savannah sighed. “That sounds terrible.”
Molly shook her head. “It was. They Escort shut down the camp after that, I’m surprised they reopened this summer. Before the kids were allowed to roam around but that’s why we have to have them in groups now, to avoid stuff like that happening. I’m surprised we don’t have cameras everywhere.”
Savannah picked at her chili and thought about everything she was just told. It seemed so out of place for a camp like Chamanog.
After lunch, Bruckheimer gave the counselors a tour of the grounds. It definitely seemed like an easy place to get lost in, but there were directories nearby and all counselors were armed with maps and flashlights and for the first time in a long time, Savannah felt like she was getting the freedom she wanted.
***
Savannah had a hard time sleeping that night. The eerie silence of the wilderness and the occasional wolf howl in a distance frightened her. She suddenly missed the safety of her mother’s home and the constant commotion of her college dormitory. It seemed as if once she got comfortable, it was time to get up again.
After breakfast, Emilio and Savannah stood underneath the hot sun as they watched the bright yellow bus pull in front of them, full of children.
“Don’t be nervous,” Emilio whispered. “It’s scary at first but you’ll be fine.”
Savannah felt like she was standing on pins and needles but she smiled through it. When the bus stopped and the doors opened, school-aged kids walked out.
“Hi everyone, welcome to Camp Champanog!” Emilio exclaimed.
Savannah scanned through her clipboard. “Time to take roll. Is there an Amanda Hansely here?”
A little blond girl with a bob raised her head. “Here!”
“Yusef Almadar?” Savannah called.
“Here!” a child in a blue baseball cap called from the back.
“Travis Ulrich?” Emilio called.
“I’m here!” a young blond boy yelled enthusiastically.
Savannah continued taking roll and before they walked as a pack to the flag pole. Savannah took the girls to settle in their bunks while Emilio led the boys to their cabin to unpack. Most of the girls were around eleven to thirteen and were already talking about getting tans and swimming. It seemed as if that were forever ago for Savannah. She made sure they unpacked their belongings and applied sunscreen before getting ready for the rest of the day.
***
The kids were split into two groups for their choice of rock climbing or painting. Savannah escorted her kids to the painting room, where they had their free reign to paint whatever they wanted under the supervision of the instructor.
“Miss Savannah!” one of her campers called from her small easel.
Savannah walked over to the blond girl painting a dog on her portrait. “Yes, Emily?”
The little girl looked at her with discerning eyes. “Can you walk me to the bathroom? I don’t feel so good.”
Savannah stood up and held the girl’s hand as they walked to the communal girls’ bathroom near the mess hall. She waited outside as Emily relieved herself and saw a young dark-haired girl with a butterfly clip wandering around alone.
“Do you need help?” Savannah asked the girl as she walked up to her.
The girl looked up at Savannah with familiar eyes before she looked down at the donut she was holding. “No, I’m okay.”
“Well, do you know where you’re supposed to be?” Savannah asked as she looked at the girl for any signs of distress.
The little girl shook her head and looked over to the rock climbing area, where Emilio was helping a camper down the wall. Before Savannah could react, the little girl was running off to the rock climbing area and Emily was standing beside her.
“Do you feel any better, Emily?”
Emily smiled and shook her head. “Yes! I’m painting my dog in class. His name is Skipper and his favorite color is blue. He likes to eat waffles.”
Savannah smiled as the two walked back to class. She loved the way children would tell randoms bits of information and it was up to you to piece it all together.
That afternoon, the campers were playing instruments at Molly’s music class after lunch and it gave Savannah some much-needed downtime in the staff rec room. The rec room seemed more of an arcade with full-sized games such as whack a mole and skee ball.
She took the ball and swung it up forward with her right hand, landing just in the forty spot in Skee Ball.
“Nice shot,” a voice said behind her.
When Savannah looked over her shoulder, Emilio was standing a few feet from her examining her form.
“Thanks,” she smiled as she reached for a ball from the row.
Emilio took a few steps closer to her and rested his hands on her shoulders, giving them a firm squeeze. “Bet I could beat you,”
Savannah chuckled and shrugged him off her shoulders.”I highly doubt that. I’m a skee ball champ.”
Emilio reached for a ball. “You have no idea who you’re dealing with,”
Emilio swung his right arm and aimed, the ball sliding up the pathway and landing in the fifty hole. Savannah raised an eyebrow.
“I’m impressed,” Savannah said. “Not bad.”
Savannah took another shot at it, the ball hitting a twenty.
“So, uh, tell me more about you,” Emilio said.
Savannah glanced over at him. “What do you wanna know?”
